The Larger the Coin, the Rarer It Is in Extremely High Grades

As promised, our Spotlight program is shifting focus to higher end rarities geared towards buyers and collectors looking for truly exceptional finds in the rare coin market.

We are proud to offer two coins which we believe will become centerpieces of your collection.... an extremely high grade Gem Liberty and one of the near-finest Saints ever known...

Both items represent exceptional quality for their respective grades, and both have incredible eye appeal.

1901-S Liberty Head Eagle Graded MS67 by PCGS
As a rule, the larger the coin, the rarer it is in extremely high grades.

With pre-1933 U.S. gold coins this is particularly so, and the With Motto Liberty Head eagle offers graphic evidence of this fact.

Despite a cumulative mintage of close to 50 million coins, the total number of $10 gold coins struck from 1866 to 1907 that are well-enough preserved to be graded MS67 by the notoriously strict standards of PCGS is a scant 31 coins, with just six graded finer (three in MS67+, and three in MS68). Factoring in resubmissions, the actual number of MS67 and finer With Motto Liberty Head eagles is likely around two dozen coins, and a majority are off the market in tightly-held collections.

The 1901-S has the highest mintage figure of any With Motto Liberty Head $10, and it is the single most common date of this design. You can purchase MS65 and even MS66 examples by the truckload, but properly graded MS67 examples are genuinely rare with a population of just six at PCGS with none better. Thus, this coin is tied with a small number of other 1901-S eagles as the finest-known for the date.

This coin is a spectacular Gem with a virtual absence of mark, and dramatic rose, green, and gold colors on top of unadulterated, frosty surfaces. This coin is literally “as-struck” and it has the sort of eye appeal seen only on the finest US gold coins.

There have been no auction records for this date since October 1995 when an example brought $18,700. The PCGS Price Guide suggests a value of $35,000, but this is speculative given the fact that none have traded via public sales for 30 years.

We recommend this coin for the following reasons:

•    With Motto Liberty Head eagles are actively collected, both as a type coin and by date. This ensures that it is likely to be in strong demand over the course of time.
•    There have been just six graded MS67 by PCGS as of September 2025, and this is after three+ decades since PCGS began grading.
•    There are auction records of $21,600 and $22,000 in 2022 for MS67 examples of the 1901-P $10; as a date that is comparable to the 1901-S in MS67.

1880-S Double Eagle Graded MS64 by CAC
The Type III design of Liberty Head double eagles began in 1877, and it continued until 1907 when this long-lived design was replaced by the St. Gaudens double eagle.

The first few issues of this type from San Francisco all have a similar rarity profile. All are common in the lowest Uncirculated grades (MS60 and MS61), slightly scarce in MS62, rare in MS63, extremely rare in MS64, and essentially unknown any finer.

This pattern is clearly evident with the 1880-S double eagle as the following shows based on current PCGS population figures:

MS60-62

526

MS63

15

MS64

6

MS65 and above

1

The coin we offer for sale is possibly the second finest known, and it is exceeded by a single PCGS/CAC MS65+ that sold for $132,000 in a 2024 auction. In fact, the exact coin we offer here has an auction record of $72,000 in early 2022.

The eye appeal of this 1880-S is off the charts with amazingly clean surfaces and intense yellow-gold luster. Nearly every higher-grade example of this early S mint issue has been repatriated from overseas banks where the coins acquired heavy abrasions and are often mottled in color.

CAC has approved just three in MS64 with a single coin better (a PCGS MS65+). PCGS has graded six in MS64 with just one finer.

If you seek to add a near-finest-known double eagle, we urge you to give this magnificent 1880-S strong consideration.
