Our experts searched the market of over 50 different issues in the $20 Saint-Gaudens series to find undervalued dates. From there, we discovered a group of hidden Saints that were 35x times rarer than the “generic” date, yet they were only selling for just 10% more!

$20 Saints Historical Price Overview and Scarcity

The $20 Saint-Gaudens series contains both readily available dates and extremely rare coins. Mintages and survival rates vary tremendously year to year. In addition, one tiny mintmark can make an incredible difference in value.

For example, in 1927, the Philadelphia Mint issued an enormous number of $20 Double Eagles. Their output was over 2.9 million coins. The same year, the Denver Mint struck 180,000 coins - all but a roll or two were melted. As a result, the 1927 $20 is readily available and sells for $1,500-$1,750 in Uncirculated. The 1927-D, meanwhile, is a major rarity. One sold for just shy of $2 million in 2014!

The takeaway message is that dates and mintmarks absolutely matter in the $20 Saint series.

As a general rule, the Saints of 1910-1923 tend to be scarcer than the 1924-1928 Philadelphia issues. Firstly, the mintages are considerably lower. Their output levels were in the hundreds of thousands instead of the millions. Secondly, the later dates were more likely to be sent overseas (and therefore shielded from the 1933 gold recall). Most, if not all, of the 1910-1923 issues were in general circulation when the Executive Order was issued.

NGC population reports confirm this phenomenon. The eight dates we have identified are on average 35x scarcer than the most available date (the 1924 Philadelphia), and in some cases, are dozens of times rarer. Simply put, these eight dates are in a completely different rarity class.

Not long ago, these rare dates were sold for $2,000+ per coin and often hovered around $2,500.

Just recently, however, they have retreated quite a bit and are now available for tantalizingly low premiums as you can see in the chart below.
