What is the Most Iconic U.S. Gold Coin?
The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coins are held to be the most beautiful, iconic coins in U.S. History.
Their extraordinary quality and visual appeal have long made them a popular item among numismatists.
This storied coin is large, exquisitely rendered, and contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold.
This coin also represents a fascinating period in U.S. history.
The best part is that this is an authentic piece of history you can own today.
The Legacy of Saint-Gaudens
Its stunning design, created by famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and commissioned by President Roosevelt, is both stunning and timeless.
Produced from 1907-1933, the reverse is a side view of a flying eagle, seen slightly from below, with a rising sun and its rays behind it. The obverse of Saint-Gaudens's final design shows a female figure of Liberty, who also represents victory.
Roosevelt had specifically requested Saint-Gaudens not to put "In God We Trust" on the new coin, but there was a public outcry about the omission of the motto, and it was later added back into the design in late 1908.
In 1907, after designing the eagle ($10 Face Value) and double eagle ($20 Face Value), but before the designs were finalized for production, Saint-Gaudens passed away, but his legacy lives on. In fact, his design continues to live on as the motif for the American gold eagle bullion coin that has been in production since 1986.
The History Behind U.S Pre-1933 Gold Coins
From the 1790’s through the 1930’s, American gold coinage served as the backbone of the country’s financial system.
Before money existed in the form of paper notes or electronic records, large sums of money were held in the form of trusted, internationally recognized United States gold coins.
The role of gold coinage was altered significantly when Franklin Delano Roosevelt passed Executive Order 6102 in 1933.
This edict prohibited both the minting and hoarding of American gold coins, and as a result, more than 2,600 metric tons of gold were confiscated and melted down in 1933, with a value in the billions of dollars today. Those that remain are a fraction of the original mintages.
The limitation on gold ownership ended in the 1970’s — and classic U.S. gold coins quickly found new life as collectibles and investments, but the remaining supply is finite.
As a result, premiums over melt will spike during periods of strong demand and extreme volatility.
Today’s relatively low premiums amidst gold’s over 30% gain in value this year make the iconic $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coin one of the best opportunities in bullion or numismatics today.
Why Now?
What makes classic U.S. gold coins like the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle so attractive right now? When the spot price of gold suddenly rises, pre-1933 U.S. gold coins usually jump in premium. The net result: a spike in the price of gold is amplified in the value of classic U.S. gold.
During strong gold rallies, a one-ounce bullion coin simply tracks the spot price dollar-for-dollar. However, vintage gold coins have a “slingshot factor” standard bullion does not. A gold bullion coin is forever tethered to spot, but classic gold coins have the ability to appreciate at a much stronger rate.
Where pre-1933 gold coins are concerned, the key for investors is timing. Very rarely are these coins available at low premiums while spot prices are increasing, yet today’s premiums represent a superb entry point for classic U.S. gold.
If history is any indication, the sharp rise in gold spot prices this year could trigger significant premium expansion. This phenomenon has repeated itself many times in the past—and we would be surprised if it didn’t happen again.
