Enticing Century-Old Ten Dollar Gold

Who knew that a century-old American gold coin—in Mint State condition no less—could be so close to melt?!

For decades, any Uncirculated pre-1933 U.S. gold coin sold for 30 to 50% over spot at a minimum. In fact, premiums were even higher during periods of extreme demand and/or market volatility. Why do these coins typically command such lofty prices? It comes down to basic supply and demand.

U.S. gold coins have a massive collector following, both here and abroad. As numismatic items, pre-1933 American gold pieces are more desirable and valuable in higher grades. Collectors care about the condition of their coins and are willing to pay up for Mint State specimens. Investors may not be as concerned about grade, but there’s strong collector demand for high-end coins.

On the supply side, the vast majority of pre-1933 U.S. gold coins are worn and/or damaged. The typical coin shows some combination of circulation, scratching, cleaning, and abrasions. Problem-free Mint State coins are the exception; only a minute fraction of all coins survived in Uncirculated. Whereas VF or XF coins can be located with some effort, pieces grading MS60 or better exist in much smaller quantities.

Given their limited supply and robust collector demand, we’re stunned by today’s minuscule premiums for Uncirculated vintage U.S. gold coins. We’ve never seen these coins available for such a tiny amount over melt.

While there are numerous bargains in the pre-1933 U.S. gold marketplace, one coin stands out as the best buy today: MS61 $10 Liberty Eagles. These coins were struck from 1838 to 1907, but the most commonly-encountered issues are dated between 1878 to 1907. Each $10 “Lib” contains 0.48375 oz. of fine gold, making it comparable in size and price to a 1/2 oz. American Gold Eagle.

$10 Eagle MS61

$10 Eagle gold coins served as a mainstay of American commerce. This denomination was both one of the first and last circulating gold coins issued by the U.S. Mint. It was first introduced in 1795 and remained in existence until 1933, when Franklin Roosevelt ordered an end to production. Its heyday was in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it was one of the world’s preferred stores of value. Not only did the coin enjoy a strong following in the states, but foreign banks and institutions used it for their gold reserves too.

Generally speaking, $10 Liberty Eagles are seen in lower circulated grades. The vast majority of specimens we see are well-worn, cleaned, polished, or damaged. Most Mint State coins owe their existence to bank hoards that were assembled near the time of issue. Luckily for today’s collectors, some $10 “Libs” were put aside early on and were preserved in decent condition.

Just five years ago, Uncirculated $10 Liberty Eagles (like the MS61s being offered today) were wholesaling routinely for 30 to 50% premiums. Looking back to the early 2000's, we remember when these sold for more than double melt! This is a testament to the coin’s collector appeal; numismatists valued the coin primarily for its rarity and historical significance. Now, you can own the same coin for just a touch above its bullion value!
