Indian Head Late Date Starter Sets

The $2.50 Indian is the only United States gold series that can be affordably completed.

This is one of the reason why it’s among the most popular coins in all of numismatics. Every other United States gold coinage type has at least one major rarity beyond the average collector’s budget. As an example, the $5 Indian series has two “stopper” dates that cost at least $10,000 in any grade: the 1909-O and 1929. Consequently, only advanced numismatists attempt to build complete sets of $5 Indians; otherwise collectors usually buy them as type coins.

It’s not just price that makes the $2.50 Indian such a beloved coin. It also boasts a gorgeous design and impressive history.
Bela Lyon Pratt – the student of Augustus St. Gaudens, who tragically passed away before he was able to redesign the $2.50 and $5 gold pieces – chose a unique and innovative design approach.

When mints had trouble reproducing inscriptions on the St. Gaudens design for smaller coinage, President Roosevelt convinced Mint Director Frank Leach that it would be a better idea to strike a design similar to that of the eagle, but below the background, to create a high-relief effect that could be more easily replicated on smaller circulated currency.

To date, these are still the only United States circulated coins designed with an incused (sunken) format. The result is a unique and highly attractive visual effect.

Price Analysis
After stopping in 1915 because of the gold shortage caused by WWI, production on the $2.50 Indian series resumed in 1925 and then ended in 1929. Of these final five issues, all are extremely affordable in Uncirculated condition. While we’ve always felt these dates were a solid value, we can especially endorse them now.

How reasonable are these prices exactly? These pieces sold for multiples of their current values within the past 10-15 years. While the NGC price guide shows their peak value at $1,360, these can all be obtained for less than $560 each today. Nowhere else in the realm of American gold coins can you assemble a year set at such a great value. This is truly a unique opportunity in the United States gold arena.
