In January, we showcased a special group of $10 Liberties struck during the California Gold Rush. Those 1855-dated Eagles boasted a superb combination of historical significance, rarity, and value. We received a tremendous response; all of our 1855 Eagles in About Uncirculated were spoken for within hours of releasing the offer. Did you get yours?
Thanks to the success of this offer, we asked our buying team to find more – and we were pleasantly surprised with what they found.
Lightning rarely strikes twice, but we have another Gold Rush rarity to show you!
Much like the 1855 $10 Eagle, the 1850 issue is very infrequently seen. Numismatists believe just 350-500 pieces exist in all grades. This is a minuscule quantity compared to the common issues of the late 19th century; later dates like the 1881 and 1901-S have dramatically larger populations, some with over 100,000 surviving coins. So, a coin like this 1850 $10 Eagle is literally hundreds of times rarer!
As a testament to the rarity of the 1850 $10 Liberty Eagle, consider how few have appeared at auction over the past several years. Fewer than a dozen were publicly offered in 2018; that reconfirms how scarce the coin truly is. As you might expect, the majority of these coins were heavily worn specimens. Like most coins from this era, the 1850 $10 Eagle is usually seen with damage and extensive signs of use.
The coins we have for sale today, on the other hand, are delightfully well-preserved. If there’s one word we could use to describe them, it’s “uniform.” Each piece displays honest wear with original patina surfaces. The surfaces are remarkably clean for a 169 year-old coin – and the overall eye appeal is outstanding. We suspect these coins were stored together for many decades, if not over a century; there’s no other way they could look so similarly well preserved!
These 1850's $10 Eagles are a fantastic way to own Gold Rush history at a reasonable price. Few coins can offer this level of rarity for under $1,200 per coin. We can think of countless coins that aren’t as scarce, yet command $10,000 or more per piece!
Today's Spotlight
One might expect a coin of this rarity to command a hefty premium. In actuality, the 1850 $10 Eagle trades at an extremely affordable price point. Much like the 1855 $10 Eagle, this piece sells for just a modest premium over an ordinary circulated $10 Liberty. We believe the ability to “upgrade” to a certified, No Motto, pre-Civil War, Gold Rush-era coin for just a 30% premium is tremendous value!
