What is a Tola?

The weight of gold is typically expressed in either Troy ounces or in grams. But in South Asian countries, particularly India and Pakistan, gold is often purchased and traded in tola weights.

The term tola dates back to the Vedic period (approx. 1750-500 BC), at which time the Indo-Aryans settled into northern India. During this period, weights were measured based on seeds. Traditionally, the weight of a tola was 100 ratti seeds.

For centuries, people measured many everyday items, not only money, using tolas. Even though currencies in South Asian countries later changed to the metric system, other uses for the tola, such as for weighing gold bullion, have continued. In fact, the very first Indian rupee, minted between 1540–1545, weighed one tola.

Starting in 1833, the tola became a standardized unit of 180 troy grains (3⁄8 troy ounce) or 11.66 grams.

Then, in 1956, the tola was replaced by the metric system and fell out of common usage for currency. However, the tola continues to be used for gold bullion bars in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Singapore, and tola gold bars are produced by bullion mints all around the world, including Pamp Suisse. Tola bars are produced up to a fineness of 999.9, and are known for their perfectly shaped, smooth, round edges.

So why buy tola weight bars as opposed to more common ounces or grams?

As one of the smallest possible units of bullion, gold tola bars are considered one of the most budget-friendly choices among investment-grade bullion bars and coins. For investors looking for divisibility, the smaller denominations available make it easy to enter into the gold market a little bit at a time.

The most common and popular size of investment-grade gold bar is the 10 tola bar, but you can also find bars of 1, 3, and 5 tolas. These small, lightweight gold bars provide excellent divisibility with premiums that are typically lower than fractional gold coins, for instance, because bars tend to be more cost-effective to produce than coins.
