Coins or Bars?

Question: Is it better to buy coins or bars when investing in gold bullion?

Answer: It's a matter of preference.

It comes down to... what is the most cost-effective, readily recognizable option? Many investors believe that sovereign gold coins – gold coins minted by government mints – are the most liquid, however reputable dealers never have a problem buying or selling bars approved by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).

The entry point is typically higher on sovereign coins than on LBMA bars, but the exit point tends to be higher as well. The spreads – the difference between your buy price and sell price – tend to be roughly the same.

Whether coins or bars are your preference, there's no mistaking that now is the right time to add gold to your portfolio. Gold declined 0.2% in January after gaining 0.7% in December and rising 3.2% in November. The metal rose 13% in 2023. Taking advantage of this week's dip ahead of Tuesday’s release of key inflation data would be savvy timing.

With the Federal Reserve planning to keep interest rates high for some time, gold may be locked into a bit of a holding pattern. However, when interest rates are finally cut, this should result in big positive movement for the gold spot price as interest rate cuts are regarded as bullish for precious metals.
